Creating a Charming Rabbit Cake

With Christmas just around the corner, I thought it would be a delightful idea to share a rabbit-inspired cake decorating tutorial with you this week.

In this tutorial, I’ll guide you through the steps to create a rabbit cake, a perfect addition to your Christmas festivities or a unique birthday surprise for someone who adores cute and fun cakes.

Let’s dive right in

Ingredients

  1. Vanilla sponge cakes (five, approximately one inch in height)
  2. Pretty pink buttercream icing (check the description for the recipe link)
  3. 10-inch drum board
  4. White icing, light pink icing, dark pink icing, and black icing
  5. Modeling paste or gum paste
  6. Templates for rabbit ears (download link in the description)
  7. Wooden skewers
  8. Short lengths of wire for whiskers
  9. Flower cutters and a flower veiner
  10. Edible glue
  11. Flower decorations for cake embellishment

Step 1: Building the Cake:

Begin by stacking and filling your cakes with buttercream. Check out my detailed cake filling and covering video (linked in the description) for more guidance. Once crumb coated, let the cake chill in the fridge for about 20 minutes.

Apply a thin layer of buttercream, refrigerate for another 10 minutes, and then cover the cake with fondant. Smooth out the fondant, trim excess, and make sure the cake looks flawless.

Step 2: Decorating the Face:

Now, let’s bring our rabbit to life! Create the rabbit’s nose and cheeks using white and light pink icing. Attach them to the center of the cake. Form the eyes with black icing, adding eyelashes for that adorable touch.

Step 3: Crafting the Ears:

For the ears, use white gum paste for the outer part and light pink for the inner part. Attach skewers to the ears, ensuring they won’t poke through. Let them set for a bit before inserting them into the cake.

Step 4: Adding Details:

Fashion a small flower for the top of the rabbit’s head using a flower cutter and veiner. Craft paws by rolling and shaping white icing, then attach them to the front of the cake.

Step 5: Tail and Whiskers:

Give your rabbit a fluffy tail by texturing a large ball of icing and attaching it to the back of the cake. Finally, add whiskers using wires covered in white paper, placing them on either side of the nose.
